The Cell Core Facility is embedded in the VIB Center for Inflammation Research (IRC) located at Tech Lane Ghent Science Park. It is our mission to ensure that every IRC scientist can perform high-standard research with cells and tissues of animal and human origin, both in BL1 and BL2 conditions. We provide this via a suite of instruments, high manufacturing standards of cell culture media, sterility testing and training in aseptic techniques and biosafety. We also offer advice and help with issues related to contamination and biosafety risk assessments. The Core is responsible for the operational support (processing, storage, etc.) to safeguard the cell culture collection that has been built up over the last 40 years.

To support the team, we are looking for a laboratory technician with a heart for service. This person will provide administrative and operational support essential for smooth functioning. This person will work in close collaboration with the team and under the supervision of the facility coordinator.

Job description

  • Manage and maintain the IRC cell culture collection including
    • registration, processing, storage, inventory, …
    • sterility testing and related cell culture activities
    • cell bank manufacturing: start-up, expansion of different cell types to master and work stock
    • cell culture experiments on request
  • Scouting the market and finally implementing a new cell bank management system to replace the current Cell Manager system
  • Monthly train newcomers in cell culture techniques
  • Organize the ordering of cell culture consumables and keep track of the inventory and stocks
  • Point of contact for researchers and students with cell-related questions and suppliers of cell culture products and equipment
  • Batch out media and supplements and corresponding quality control

Profile

  • BSc diploma as laboratory technician or equivalent through experience
  • Experience with cell culturing and sterile working is required
  • The desire to specialize or be experienced in administration and related software platforms (note that administration will be at least 50% of the workload eg cell culture collection program, ordering platform)
  • Service-minded, positive, flexible and easily approachable person
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Well-organized team player
  • Attentive to detail
  • Fluent in Dutch and English
