The VIB Technologies program (https://vibcoreprogram.sites.vib.be/en) is the institute's research infrastructure, offering access to cutting-edge technologies. It comprises 10 core facilities, each with specific technology expertise located in Ghent, Leuven, or Brussels. These facilities support VIB's 1700 researchers with over 100 staff members.

The VIB Bioimaging Core in Leuven is looking to expand its capabilities for bioimage reconstruction and analysis. VIB has several research focus areas, organized in different research centers. The VIB Bioimaging Core in Leuven is hosted by the Center for Brain and Disease Research (https://cbd.sites.vib.be/en#/). The core offers access, support, consultancy, and training in light- and electron microscope and image processing and analysis (https://bioimagingcore-leuven.sites.vib.be/en). A team of motivated microscopists, including a senior Bioimage Analysis Expert, enables microscopy for the Leuven based VIB community.

Job description

The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying the image analysis needs of the core facility users and propose the most efficient image analysis approach, and work within a highly international, multi-cultural, and interdisciplinary environment with a common interest in bioimaging technologies.

As junior bioimage analyst at the VIB BioImaging Core, the responsibilities will include the following:

  • In collaboration with the existing core team, support the users by identifying and proposing the most efficient existing image analysis tool (commercial or open source).
  • Implement robust image analysis pipelines to be readily accessible (locally and remotely) to Life Scientists at VIB.
  • Customize existing software scripts and image analysis workflows.
  • Train BIC users on the most commonly available commercial and open source bioimage analysis tools.
  • Educate life scientists in Image analysis: involvement in the organization of/and participation in educational activities (Workshops, Courses, Symposia, Training schools and others).
  • When applicable, create new image analysis solutions and tools, in collaboration with the Senior Bioimage Analyst.
  • Staying up to date and actively contributing to relevant bioimage analysis communities.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from users to evaluate image analysis services.

Profile

  The successful applicant should have:

  • A Master's or PhD degree in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics or Biophysics or equivalent through experience.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in open source (ImageJ, CellProfiler, QuPath…) and commercial bioimage analysis tools (NIS Elements, Zen Blue, Imaris, Arivis, Amira…).
  • Proficiency in programming (e.g., Matlab, Python and/or Java).
  • Knowledge of different analysis software packages, and how to link them as image analysis workflows.
  • Mindset for supporting and enabling science of other research labs through offering of expertise.
  • Team player with strong social, communication and didactic skills
  • Excellent time management and personal effectiveness
  • Eager to learn and adapt in a fast-evolving environment. 
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written.

    The following added competencies/experience will be considered an advantage:

    • Experience working in a support role in a multi-user core facility environment.
    • Experience and knowledge in IT and in HPC implementation.
    • Knowledge of modern deep learning algorithms and their deployment.
    • Experience interacting with life scientists and collaborating toward scientific publications in biology.
    • User training and service experience in the field of Image analysis.
    • Teaching experience in Image analysis at various levels.
    • Experience handling large multidimensional microscopy images.
    • Knowledge of bioimaging technologies: microscopy, image formation, optics, and advanced digital image acquisition.
