About VIB

VIB is an excellence-based research institute dedicated to high-impact life sciences research and world-class technology transfer. VIB Scientists pursue basic molecular life-science research with a strong focus on translating scientific breaktroughs into novel technologies, new diagnostics, innovative medecines and improved crops and nutritional products, through close cooperation with industry.

Our institute greatly values diverse standpoints and promotes an inclusive environment in which everyone is respected.

VIB is currently looking for a qualified and motivated Single Cell Technology Specialist:

About The Technology Watch Team

The Technology Watch Team at VIB is continually analyzing the potential of emerging and disruptive technologies to advance research at VIB. Where appropriate, Tech Watch mediates privileged access to these platforms by forming partnerships and negotiating purchasing licenses. Technologies of interest are subsequently evaluated and developed alongside VIB PIs in Tech Watch’s Technology Innovation Lab.

In early 2018, VIB launched the Single Cell Accelerator (SCA), a new Tech Watch initiative to ensure that VIB remains at the forefront of this cutting-edge field. The SCA runs in the Technology Innovation Lab and allows the evaluation, development and integration of breakthrough single-cell technologies. Areas of great interest include single cell: RNA-Seq, surface protein profiling (CITE-Seq/Reap-Seq/Ab-Seq), nuclei seq, DNA-Seq, spatial omics, manipulation, CRISPR screens, multiplex culturing and pharmacogenetics. Single Cell Technology Specialists will work in the Technology Innovation Lab alongside the VIB PI’s where prototype instruments and early-stage technologies from high-potential fields are evaluated and developed. Many of these technologies are sequencing based, and therefore expertise in this field would be an asset.

To this end, we are looking to expand the Technology Watch Team with a Single Cell Technology Specialist. In this role, you’ll be actively exploring the potential of novel life science technologies and instruments through pilot projects run for and in collaboration with multiple VIB groups. We expect that you will evaluate 3-4 pre-commercial and/or recently commercialized single cell instruments or technologies for their potential to create value for the VIB community each year (through contribution to scientific papers, IP, service fees etc.). Once platforms have been optimized and run daily, you will take on the role to disseminate your expertise across the VIB centers.

You’ll function as a liaison between emerging life science companies and VIB scientists, facilitating breakthrough science through pilot projects on novel instruments. Your skill set in Life Sciences is adaptable and you already have some experience in working with new technology platforms. Alongside this, you have strong interpersonal skills and therefore have the ability to work with multiple PI’s / Core facilities in a flexible manor.

Your profile

  • Ph.D. in Life Sciences, preferably with a single cell technology-oriented focus
  • Experience in technologies related to Single Cell analysis / Sequencing (eg. 10X Genomics, DropSeq, InDrop etc.) / Microfluidics / Engineering / Bioinformatics is considered a plus
  • Strong hands-on lab skills and troubleshooting experience
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong capability to work independently as well as in team
  • Excellent organizational, communication, writing, networking, negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Strong and broad interest in the interplay of science and technology
