VIB-VUB Center for Structural Biology

Joris Messens Lab

VIB is one of the leading life science research and innovation institutes in Europe. It is based on a cooperation between 5 Belgian Universities including VUB in Brussels. The Messens lab at VIB-VUB is a world leader in the redox field with a strong track record of high-impact publications. The lab provides a cutting-edge protein biochemistry and structural biology research environment in a highly dynamic and team-oriented international research group tackling essential biological problems in redox signaling.

A PhD position is immediately available in the Messens lab Center for Structural Biologyin Brussels, Belgium for a well-qualified student who will apply and is awarded a Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) grant in protein biochemistry and structural biology.

Mission of the lab

The Messens lab decipher how cells sense redox metabolites and transduce these stimuli into downstream biological effects. Knowledge of the mechanisms by which sensors and transducers function are invaluable in understanding how redox homeostasis pathways can be engineered. This in turn provides ways to improve oxidative stress resistance in plants and to identify therapeutic targets for diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

The PhD project

The project, as part of the Excellent of Science (EOS)-project ‘Organellar Redox Signaling in Plants’, will focus on structure-function studies of plant proteins that participate in redox signaling cascades. The student will address vital outstanding biological problems in plant redox signaling. This exciting project will likely yield high-caliber results suitable for publication in top journals.

Applicants should have obtained a Master of Science degree with great or greatest distinction. Expertise in molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysical techniques and enzymology is essential, as well as fluency in English. Knowledge of plant physiology is an asset. We will finance you with an EOS-fellowship, and support your CSC fellowship application.
