VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research

Rudi Beyaert Lab

About the lab

The Beyaert lab at the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research (IRC) studies the molecular and cellular mechanisms that control inflammation, further insights of which raises the prospect for better understanding and rational design of therapeutics for several diseases, including autoimmunity, allergy and cancer. Treatment of humans and animals with the plant phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is protective in a wide range of diseases, such as colitis, type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis.

Therefore, ABA might be an interesting nutraceutical substance that could explain some health benefits from ABA-rich foods. In mammals, ABA can originate from three different sources: (1) from nutrition, (2) generated by gut microbes or (3) through endogenous biosynthesis in animal cells, which is still largely unexplored.

Job description

The research fellow will study the impact of different sources of ABA on gut microbiota and intestinal inflammation. This will involve mouse models for human colitis, ABA analysis, microbiome profiling, immunophenotyping, and synthetic biology of bacteria.

For this, the candidate has access to several newly developed research tools such as sensitive ABA reporter assays and ABA-depleted mice, as well as several core facilities (SPF and germ-free mouse facilities, sequencing, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, bio-imaging).

  • master degree or PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or equivalent
  • be highly motivated and team-oriented
  • having a very good track record (study results and/or publications, …)
  • good writing and communication skills in English

Desirable but not required

  • Experience in immunology and microbiome-related research
  • Experience with Flow Cytometry
  • Experience with mouse models

We offer

4 years (2x2) PhD fellowship or 3 years junior postdoc fellowship. He/she will work in a stimulating multicultural environment, will have access to cutting-edge technologies, personal career assistance, a strong focus on technology transfer and a seat waiting in high level training courses. The position is immediately available.

How to apply?

Motivated candidates are asked to apply online. Candidates should send a CV, motivation letter, and the names and contact details of 3 references. For more information contact Rudi Beyaert.
