About the lab

The primary focus of our research group is the identification and characterization of genes and genetic mechanisms implicated in non-lesional epilepsy, including the severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs). Starting from a unique collection of well-characterized patients, we use advanced genomic approaches including whole exome, genome, methylation and RNA sequencing, to identify novel disease genes and genetic modifiers. In parallel, we use human iPSC derived 2D and 3D cultures to translate the genetic work of our group into biological understanding and into improved, more targeted treatments for people with epilepsy.

Job description

Our team is looking for a post-doctoral researcher who will work on large sets of genomic and clinical data to improve our understanding of the epilepsies and their phenotypic variability, and to translate these insights into more personalized treatments for people with epilepsy. Your job will include the in silico analysis of large datasets, in close connection and collaboration with team members working in the clinic and the wet lab. Within the team, you will be expected to work independent and drive your own research project. Your work will be embedded in larger collaborative (international) projects, such as the Epi25 initiative https://epi-25.org

Profile

We seek a young and ambitious postdoc with a (neurological) genetic and/or bioinformatics background and proficient experience in computational genomics and/or analysis of genomic datasets. Knowledge of neurology, and/or epilepsy is a plus, as is an interest in cell culture work. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team is highly valued. Effective communication and writing skills, and an excellent mastery of the English language are essential. A publication record in peer-reviewed journals, including at least two first- (or last-) author publications in the last 4 years, is essential.

We offer

  • Financial support for at least 1 year. The applicant will be assisted in the application for personal fellowships during this time (Marie-Curie, HFSP, EMBO, National funding organizations,…).
  • A motivated team where each scientist has a personal project
  • Access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and core facilities
  • Diverse training programs available through VIB and UAntwerp
  • A stimulating international research environment
  • A strong and dynamic network of international collaborators

How to apply?

Motivated candidates are asked to apply online.

Applications must include a

  • CV
  • a letter of motivation explaining why you are interested in our work and aspire a postdoc
  • the name and contact details of three references (including promotor of PhD thesis).

We begin reviewing candidates in March 2020; reviewing will continue until the position is filled.
