Postdoctoral Researcher Investigating the Role of Phase Transitions and Stress Granule Dynamics in Neurodegeneration
The Laboratory of Neurobiology is part of the research group Experimental Neurology (Neuroscience Department) at KU Leuven. The group has a close collaboration with the Neurology Department of the University Hospitals Leuven with about 50 researchers in different domains.
In addition, the laboratory is one of the research groups of the VIB Center for Brain & Disease Research (CBD) at KU Leuven/Campus Gasthuisberg focusing on Neuroscience. There are 13 research groups within the CBD with a total employment of 230 researchers.
The Laboratory focuses on clinical and fundamental research into the prevention, heredity, the pathogenesis and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).
The research project, under supervision of principal investigator Ludo Van Den Bosch, will focus on the role of low complexity domains in disease-causing proteins, with a special focus on the dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) encoded from the hexanucleotide repeats in C9orf72. Effects of these DPRs on the nucleocytoplasmic transport and stress granule formation will be investigated. Biophysical techniques will be used to study the structural characteristics and dynamics of these structures. Moreover, this research will involve in vitro techniques including work with iPSCs, as well as in vivo research using small animal models (Drosophila and zebrafish).
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with interest in neurodegeneration and experience in. Motivated candidates with a strong commitment to basic research are invited to apply.
- should hold a PhD degree in biology, biochemistry or biomedical sciences
- should have experience in research on neurodegenerative disorders
- should be able to work in a team with a high degree of autonomy
- should be able to guide and supervise PhD students
- should fluently speak and write English.
We offer a fulltime 3 year contract for a postdoctoral position in an enthusiastic and motivated team and a dynamic scientific work environment. The Center for Brain & Disease (CBD) at KU Leuven is an international research group focusing on neuroscience. The CBD provides different opportunities to present and share data on weekly seminars, lectures and international conferences. Different state-of-the-art core facilities are available for all CBD researchers.
